How Much Does It Cost To Be "Middle Class"

I grew up poor-ish. We were happy and my mom and dad did everything they could do for my brother and sister to feel normal. But there were hard times. My parents were a School Teacher/Upholster, and mom was a waitress. So sometimes when ends wouldn't meet, we would get those white boxes with cheese, and powdered milk. You ever had to mix your milk on your own? Not good or fun. So what is actually middle class now. We were just about middle class growing up. But what would make you middle class in times today?

SmartAsset calculated the income it would take today to be considered "Middle Class" and the numbers are crazy. From their survey "middle class income" is between two thirds and double and areas middle or median income.

So if you're in sunny California, you will need to make at least $113,176 to be middle class. What?!?!?

Several other cities require an income over $100,000! Are the bosses listening? I could use more money because I'm not close to middle class.

Check this out. Detroit, comes in lower then California, but only by $25k, so if you want to be middle class in Detroit it's going to cost you $72,906. (bosses!?!? you hear this?)

Don't get me wrong. I love my family and when you are a family you do what you need to do to make ends meet. You didn't complain, and if you did, you got nothing. We found a way and I'm sure you can too.

Seriously? $100K for middle class? I would like to see this happen today for my family. Long way away from that.
